VIEWS FROM ABOVE

This is Prescott's signature sight - Thumb Butte.

It doesn't look very much like a thumb from this direction but from the north the resemblance is better.

The much more impressive sight is to the north - Granite Mountain.

The next several photos were taken, as were the previous two, from atop Prescott's parking garage.  I think you can see why they're not included in brochures from the Chamber of Commerce.

The next one is kind of an exception to that rule when one crops out the wires and other stuff atop the building.  It's the rear of the Jersey Lilly (second floor) and the Palace Saloon (ground floor).  The owners have done their best to convey the western image.

But, looking toward the picturesque county courthouse, the view across rooftops returns to the ugly.

We just have to face facts.  While somewhat interesting, the views of rooftops just aren't very scenic.

  1. I'm listening to a Dean Koontz book on audio tape (Odd Thomas). It's set in a small southern California city in the mojave & the descriptions of the buildings match these buildings exactly. So I found them VERY interesting :) But you're right, the mountains are just, "ah!"

  2. It's kind of fun to go up on top of the parking garage and look down on everything though, isn't it? You never know what you might see.

  3. Dana, the newer buildings are taking over but most of downtown Prescott maintains it's old-timey look.

Judy, I think I remember you having a photo of the back of Jersey Lil's awhile back like the one I shot.

  4. I love the fire escape and roof top shots. You just dont see that everyday. Looks like it could be a location shoot for a David Lynch film.

Jersey Lil's is a fun place.

  5. Tom, Jersey Lil's is my favorite Whiskey Row watering hole. It's quite nice. We'll have to visit it for a cool one next time you're here. It's directly above the Palace, which you photographed so well. And it's the only place on the Row with an outdoor balcony overlooking the Square.

  7. That's ok, what counts are memories and the "timey" side elsewhere in town.
