TUESDAY TRAVELS

May 4, 2009.

Watson Lake boulder area outside of Prescott, Arizona.

The day I discovered my legs were no longer fit for clambering around on uneven surfaces and making quick, short hops to get down off of them.

I was 69 years old and trying to get down off these rocks without killing myself made me feel like I was 100!

I no longer had spring in my step.

It was a sobering discovery.

Now I'm 76, my goatee is even whiter and my legs are even weaker.

Damn! I hate these travels.

  1. You are not that old. Your knees just aged faster than the rest of you.

  2. Slow and steady old boy. You are not meant to be hopping on rocks.
When we hike now, there are certain climbs, rocks, crevices and etc that I either take very slowly or not at all.

    1. Unless you're using a stick or poles I'd advise "not at all".

  3. Ah, but yo have your eyesight! As we get older we learn to compensate and enjoy more of life!

  4. Am I going to have a future stupid headline "Ex-newsman stranded standing on six inch rock."?

  5. Hiking poles. Even the kids use them. They save the day!

    1. I have them but haven't used them for rugged land travel.

  6. Well, I've got you by a few years and I'm finding all of a sudden that I've got pins, needles and other assorted sharp objects in my feet after a round of golf. Don't think I'm going to try mountain climbing anymore, either!

    1. I haven't played golf in years, Lowell, but I have that nerve pain stuff in my feet, too. I'm a regular user of something called Gabapentin, which helps.

  7. Those boulders obviously need handrails installed!

That looks like a place not too far from here called Elephant Rocks State Park. I've been there many a time, but I couldn't do it now. Not even if I stayed on the blacktop walking path that runs through it. They have braille stations, too. I guess so the blind people can feel the rocks and read about them.
