My neighbor across the street has put in a big garden but the javelinas got all his zucchini this year. But that didn't stop this smiling face.
That's a huge bloom, as big as my face.
Sunflowers make everyone happy, I think.

A four foot fence for the javelina, a ten foot fence for deer, and netting for grasshoppers; to protect a garden; you need a yard that looks like a jail.
The yellow bits are modified leaves, the face is made of numerous little flowers, each a fertilization point that can produce a seed. They are also tough and will defend themselves. Obviously, I love them.

I always like to bring home a bouquet of sunflowers from Trader Joe's. Even though they are itchy stems, they are a burst of sunshine!
