Judy packed away all of our Christmas decorations yesterday, with my approval.
Normally she waits until New Year's Day but she put them out earlier than usual this year and the end of the year just seemed to call for a fresh start sooner.
I'm often reminded of Queen Elizabeth's remark in her speech to Parliament in 1992, referring to the year past as "an annus horribilis".
One of her children had divorced that year, two others had separated from their wives, and a fire gutted Windsor Castle.
A horrible year 2025 was too but I won't dwell on it.
So now we move on.
Fortunately, our largest tree is only about 18 inches tall so it fits neatly into our picnic basket.
Maybe 2026 will be the year that we once again have a picnic.

in the city a mile high, tradition has it that one keeps their Christmas lights and decorations up until the start of the National Western Stock Show, The stock show starts on Jan 9th!!
ReplyDeleteWell my city is also a mile high but we don't have the Stock Show.
DeleteI didn't put up a lot of holiday decorations, but I put them away today as well.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like the gloom over the land has a lot of us not in the mood for the holidays.
DeleteI keep my decorations, very minimal this year, up till Twelfth Night, the last day of the Christmas season. I don't put them out till Christmas Eve though.
ReplyDeleteOurs went down the day after. I feel like a minimalist again.
ReplyDeleteA horrible year yet with warm and wonderful moments. I'll try to focus on those. I didn't decorate that much but it still took me an hour or so to take them down and put them away. It involved a ladder--not my favorite.
ReplyDeleteI guess I'm still waiting for Christmas as this is the first year we did not put up decorations in the house.
ReplyDeleteShrink-wrapped tree sounds like a great idea. One of my daughters used to leave her tree up all year and siply changed decorations according to season or holiday, with little easter bunnies all over it for Easter, for example and any little kids visiting would get to take one home if they wanted.
ReplyDeleteWe're complete busts. We don't decorate at all. 😊❤️
ReplyDeleteI am too tired to put mine away today but maybe tomorrow, or New Year's Day...
ReplyDeleteMine are still up because we have been on the road every day since Christmas. I am still enjoying them, actually, so they may stay up til Old Christmas.
