AN INTERLOPER

We had a visitor on our back fence today.

He looked straight into the camera but didn't seem to mind being photographed.

SWMBO got out the bird book but we can't be sure what he is, other than some type of hawk.

We thought he was a Kestrel, though he doesn't seem to bear the head markings.

So, if you can give us a hint, let us know.

I'm pretty sure this is a Cooper hawk. I saw one in our backyard once and the bird guy next door identified it as such. I remember the beautiful white and brown spotted breast feathers.

Yes! A nice looking Cooper's Hawk! They show up now and then in our yard to munch on a sparrow. Kestrels are smaller, about the same size as a robin. Nice catch, they usually don't hang around if I have the camera out.

Ooh - isn't he regal! I'll have to share these pics with Dr. M.

Looks like a slightly immature Cooper's Hawk, yes...definitely a feather hunter. Nice!
