AH, YES, I REMEMBER IT WELL

  1. I was born in '52 so I don't remember much. But when I was a kid the cheapest thing families could do for entertainment was to go for a long drive. Nobody talked about the price of gas.

  2. It was still that way in the early 60's, too. 'Course, the Big Money oil speculators have us by the throats these days, and they don't care about anyone but themselves. Truckers, airlines, daily commuters....screw 'em. As long as they get theirs. Where did we go so wrong?

  4. I remember a time when I was working in a gas station and a car from California pulled in. The driver went to the rest room and his beautiful lady stayed in the car. You never saw such a clean windshield when they left.

  5. And those three guys probably had kids at home and a wife who stayed home with the kids...

  6. I remember those days. And, if your tyres needed air, they would do that for you too!

  7. What I remember most is how good gas used to smell in the early 50s, now there are so many additives the stuff stinks.

  8. All I can remember from my early days of motoring in the UK was being served with petrol (gasoline), rather than self-service. I would be interested to know what Americans pay for gasoline. In France we currently pay about 1.64 euros/litre which if my arithmetic is correct is the equivalent of a little under $10/gallon. In the UK the cost is around $10.5/gallon.

  9. I would love to pay the price of a gallon in the US, In Germany it's around 1.67 a litre. One of the reasons it is so expensive is the tax. A little less than have is tax. What can I say. If you are going to drive you pay.

  10. I paid around $3.88 per gallon the other day - so maybe I'll shut up about the price! On the other hand I don't have any public transportation options where I live...

What I remember about NON self service stations was wishing I could just get out & do it myself because it would be faster. I was always a tad impatient. Of course, by the time I was actually driving myself they were mostly nonexistent.
