THROWBACK THURSDAY

I hardly recognize myself but that's me at the 1968 Republican National Convention in Miami Beach.  The convention mainly ran at night so I spent my days on the beach, which may account for that blond hair.  I can no longer explain why I smoked back then.  Or more important, why I wore a Nehru jacket!

  1. But it does explain why all the chicks were in hot pursuit

    1. Yes it does. Must have been the camera angle.

  3. That is a large cigarette, what kind of tobacco did you use? Did it rhyme with Tijuana?

    1. I can't explain that, Joe. As for the tobacco, it was normal . . either a Marlboro or a Kool. I was alternating those back in the day.

  5. You look like you are doing a Franklin Roosevelt immitation (after your name sake?). Nixon picking Agnew as a running mate at that convention may have only been matched by McCain picking Palin.

  6. I can't remember the last time I saw a Nehru jacket. Back in the day my mom wanted to get one for my dad but he said he'd never wear one.

  7. Well,..
Are you sure that is a cigarette and not a pen, or marker of some sort? And as for the jacket-I'm surprised the Republicans let you anywhere near the convention hall.

    1. No it was a cigarette. I remember getting on the convention floor the last night of the convention and standing right below Nixon on the podium as he was giving his speech.

  8. Looks a bit like Hunter Thompson of the time, only with more hair. Nice pic....In '68 for a bit I worked the other side of the street on RFK's campaign in CA before being sent back to VN for 2nd tour. I had very similar glasses. Those were the days, eh?

My wife's family knew Agnew's family, we had a letter from Judy A. starting "Spiro and I congratulate you on your wedding...", caused great hilarity among our friends.

    1. Hunter was one of my heroes back then. That RFK campaign in California must have been a real heart-breaker. Then back to Nam. You must have been thinking "what did I do wrong?"

But at least you had Judy and Spiro to cheer you up, eh?

  9. And to think the Nehru jacket was made obsolete by the Leisure Suit. OMG....
