THROWBACK THURSDAY

If you live in the United States and watch television you may have caught part or all of the 14-hour series The Roosevelts on PBS.  It told the life stories of three prominent members of the family, Presidents Theodore and Franklin Delano and Franklin's wife Eleanor.  Theodore, or Teddy as he was more commonly known, had a long history with the state of North Dakota, where I grew up.  Just 60 miles from my childhood home, in the city of Minot, the largest park is known as Roosevelt Park, named in honor of Teddy.

There is a large statue of Teddy in his Rough Rider uniform and once back in the 40's or 50's, my family's camera caught me paying a visit.

  1. We have a version of this same statue in downtown Portland in front of our art museum. It must have been very popular in its day and I can only wonder how many cities own a copy of this statue. I've seen photos of Teddy on horseback and he never looked this good.

  4. You look like you are ready to get up on the horse. Did you do much riding as a lad?

    1. I rode a horse once, as a young adult. When I found it would not obey my instruction to turn, I got off and never was on another one again.

  5. I enjoyed that show very much. About a year ago I read the biography of Isabella Greenway, the first female congresswoman from Arizona, the founder of the Arizona Inn in Tucson and close friends with Eleanor. It was a fascinating book about a fascinating woman. The things she accomplished for the brand new state of Arizona were amazing.

  6. The Burns series was excellent. Guess when you were a laddie they did not post Stay Off signs. Were you holding on to the sword to stay up or were you mugging for the camera?

    1. No, in those days youngsters were permitted to go where ever they wanted. As for the picture I can't even remember it being taken.

  7. North Dakota in discussions will probably be known as BO or AO, Before OIl or After Oil. This picture must have been taken about 55 BO.
NPR had an interesting story about Prop 5 in North Dakota this election. If passed, 5% of the state's oil royalties would go for conservation. That has pitted Ducks Unlimited against Big Oil.
