IS THIS AN OMEN?

While on my daily perambulation (to the mailbox and back) the other day, I spied an early indication of the changing of the seasons.

A tiny leaf fallen from the Red Maple in our front yard.

Now this is August and the mercury is still climbing to nearly 100 degrees on an almost daily basis.

So it seems a bit early for the leaves to be changing color from their summertime green to the autumnal red.

I am no arborist but I'm thinking if one leaf came loose in a gusty wind and blew free from its mooring, perhaps in it's death throes it may turn from nile to scarlet.

I don't know if that is correct or not but I picked up the leaf and brought it inside to photograph anyway.

I like the red leaves and, though I dread the icy days of winter, I must admit I look forward to the entire tree turning carmine.

Wouldn't you?

  1. We used to love those vivid autumn colors, but dreaded the months of gray skies, damp chill, freezing rain, ice and snow storms. Now we enjoy the autumn color by driving over to Paso Robles or for a more adventurous view up to the eastern slope of the Sierra or simply seeing your posts and others on the World Wide Web.

  2. A BTW P.S.-I used to love those Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce performances of Sherlock and Watson.
From what movie was your banner taken and who is the lovely damsel in some sort of distress?

    1. "Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror" and the actress is the lovely Evelyn Ankers, a British-American actress born in Chile. She acted in many terror films of the era and was known as "The Queen of Screamers."

  3. Funny thing. This morning, I noticed a lot of leaves, brown & down, in the loop by the field. Anything that would have broken loose would have in that wind before the rain yesterday. But maybe there will be an early fall.

  5. This morning I took the dog out early and found it to be 72 degrees. It hasn't been this cool in a month. Then I began paying close attention to the color of leaves. Wishful thin king, I'm afraid. Nada, not one. *sigh* Back to "hurry up and wait".

  6. Fall is my favorite time of year. I like the coolness and the fragrance in the air. It never seems to last long enough and then I have to rake up and dispose of all those leaves.

  7. I'm also noticing leaves tinged with fall colors. Much too soon.

  8. I love the red of maples, but then I love maple anything.

We have a lot of dry, dead leaves on trees and shrubs and hedges.

  9. Rainy and cool here this week, but I don't think summer has sweated its last just yet.
