THROWBACK THURSDAY

Does anyone remember what these are?

That's just a small part of my collection gathering dust.

Here's what is inside one of those plastic cases.

If you're old enough to remember cassette tapes, then this is familiar to you.

They came after LP's, which came after 45's, and before CD's.

You remember CD's, don't you?

Here's a sample of what you could have heard on that tape above.

And curiously, it's rather apt for Throwback Thursday.

  1. In '67 I had a Teac reel to reel in my bunker.

    1. I used to own a big old reel-to-reel, too, but I don't remember the brand.

  2. I remember driving around in a friends new Mustang listening to the Beatles on an 8 track...what would they think of next?

  3. Sure remember those. Another sign we are now full fledged members of the Gray Panthers.

  5. I have music tapes that used to belong to my dad, but I no longer have anything to play them on. I think I might have every Genesis and every Pink Floyd album on cassette, actually. I listened to them enough when I was young that i still think of albums as having two sides.

I also have cassettes that he recorded himself that had my sister and I making noises and even talking a bit when we were very young. My dad said you used to be able to buy blank tapes for a dollar and it's how everybody traded music.

I was born in 1991, though, so I never actually purchased any of my own.

  6. I used to have a car with a cassett player. I'd leave a Barry Manilow tape on the front seat when I drove to work and mine was the only car never broken into.

  7. I have a bunch of those. Tried to sell them at a garage sale once and no one wanted them. Go figure.

  8. I'd go for some BB King or Ella Fitzgerald from that set.

  9. I hope you have a yellow wooden pencil to wind it tight when the tape gets slack.

  10. I've still got a few VHS tapes; hundreds of CDs; but no 8-tracks! We're not even using DVDs much anymore what with Netflix. Time changes everything. Or better, most everything changes over time.

  11. Got rid of cassettes and cassettes player when we moved a couple of years ago... I remember the pencil always on hand to rewind the tape when needed ;-)

  12. I still have four of these stashed away in a drawer. They were ones that couldn't be replaced by CD's which of course have now all been replaced by.....that invisible line of code that sits on my iPod.

  13. Dylan made me mix tapes, long ago. Never forgotten.

  14. Still have a drawer full of cassettes and still listen to them. An essential musical history link between vinyl and CDs
