BEGINNING A NEW ERA

Another new year has begun.

I watched the magic moment occur in New York City at 10 o'clock my time last night.

Less than half an hour later I was in the Arms of Morpheus.

About four hours later I was awake again and the rest of the hours until shortly after 6 this morning were a scattershot of dozing and tossing and turning.

When I finally rose I discovered that I had forgotten to take my night pills last night, which includes a tablet to help me sleep.

Hence my wakefulness.

Old age and a bad memory.

At least I'll sleep well tonight.

Our New Year's Eve dinner was lobster tails and green pea risotto, along with about half a bottle of Prosecco.

A good feast and, no, I took no pictures.

I did take the new banner photo on this blog, though, yesterday afternoon, as I was taking a break from football on television.

Stepping outside on a rainy weekend, I noticed a patch of sunlight on the side of Mingus Mountain and grabbed the camera for a quick shot.

It's a little fuzzy as I realized later I had the camera in macro mode.

But I think that kind of adds to the mood of the picture.

I met my neighbor Rick, out walking Reggie.

He said he and Lori wouldn't be celebrating the big night as she has been not feeling well lately.

Apparently there is a nasty type of influenza going around.

Another neighbor had told me she had the "stuff" too and it had lasted about ten days.

No way to spend the holidays.

And so life goes on here in the Central Highlands of Arizona on this January 1st.

No snow on the ground but as I said it's been a rainy weekend and it's dark and dripping out there now.

Onward.

  1. Happy New Year! It's dripping down here today too. The skies are dark and heavy. My sister has that flu thing too! She's not happy about it since she had her flu shot. The one going around must be a different strain. I've talked to her on the phone and she sounds yucky! Your dinner sounds fabulous. Mine was a series of tapas that 6 of us in the kitchen all contributed to. Thankfully, my friend Julie has a huge kitchen so 6 people cooking was not a problem.

  3. Happy new year! It was really wet for us in southern CA....sorry we 'sent' it to you guys over in AZ. There are lots of bad colds going around my office, but so far nothing that qualifies as the flu. Fingers crossed....

    1. Don't ever have to say you're sorry for sending us desert rats moisture.

  4. I saw that same shot on Rick's phone. I think you could photograph that land and mountains every day and it would be frame worthy. Yes, I, who hasn't been ill in over 15 years, succumbed to whatever this flu thing is. I've been fighting it off successfully for a week, but New Year's Eve Day I think I lost the battle. I haven't ground to a halt, just slowed down. For me that is going 50 mph instead of 95!

    1. Gadfrey! I'm starting to think I'm the only one who hasn't succumbed to this crud. Get well soon but in the meantime just rest.

  5. Nasty inversion smog here this past week, hopefully clearing later today. I did not wake up for midnight, although I think I heard something... may have dreamt it. Up at 0500, which was still New Year somewhere on the planet, I think.

Wishing you a hopeful new year, with lots of birds and cats, although not both in the same place at the same time.

  6. I really like the banner photo; it reminds me a lot of one of Russell Chatham's lithographs.

    1. I was unaware of Chatham but looked him up and you're right. Just a bit of luck with nature, on my part.

  9. Happy New Year, and I do like that banner shot.

I got myself a headache late in the afternoon on New Year's Eve, so decided to stay in. We had snow in the evening, which I think might well have muffled the sound of fireworks when they were due to go off during the evening.

  10. Both of us caught the "new flu" around Thanksgiving, mostly coughing and hacking....it seems to last forever. After better than a month, I'm down to one giant loogie a day.

Happy New Year to you both.
