I visited the Peaceful Prairie Alpaca Ranch, just a few minutes from my home.
It was National Alpaca Farm Day and three alpaca farms within a few miles of each other in Prescott Valley were all having open houses.
The owners of this ranch raise about 80 alpacas.
Visitors were allowed to wander the grounds, watching and photographing the animals.
Some of you may be wondering what the difference is between alpacas and llamas.
The owners of the ranch anticipated that question and, tongue in cheek, have posted a sign answering it.

You didn't get a picture of the Alpaca's making sweaters. Don't they make great sweaters?
Tom, I believe you're thinking of the Angora goats.
How do you know about all these events? Oh, yeah. Must be retired. LOOKING for things to do. Sigh. Alpaca made fabulous coats and probably sweaters. Llama have a nasty habit of spitting in your face and biting your shoulder. They are vampires.

80 alpacas? Where do you draw the line? How many is TOO many alpacas? How do you round them up? Can dogs herd them, or do you need cowboys on horseback, or will they come with a whistle? Does each group have a leader, like goats, that they'll follow? I don't know much about alpacas. You've made me curious.

I understand they do not like to be petted and they spit a lot...no animal is perfect.
Ah this reminds me of the two alpacas we used to see on our walks around town. We always shouted, "Hi Al" to both of them. They are beautiful. Had a good laugh about that sign.
I love that sign! This must have been fun. Alpacas are so cute with their little fuzzy bangs!
I made a blanket using alpaca wool - it's just as scratchy as sheep wool, but warm!
Joe, that describes llamas. Alpacas like their necks and backs petted and are quite social.
I got such a kick out of the description of a llama.
