This is a small portion of the Granite Dells.
Commonly known as just "the Dells" to locals, it is an area of exposed bedrock and large boulders of granite that have eroded into an unusual, lumpy, riddled appearance.
At least, so says Wikipedia.
In the early days of Hollywood, the cowboy actor Tom Mix had a home nearby and filmed some of his movies in this area.
Nowadays the area has become popular with hikers and rock climbers.
Two lakes, Watson and Willow, are actually reservoirs formed by man-made dams.
You may have noticed electricity poles and it's true, not all of the Dells are as remote as one might imagine.
There are a number of private homes scattered through the area, many with spectacular views.
Thirty years ago, when I was much younger and much more agile, I clambered around on these boulders.
I'm not as old as the Dells.
The granite has been dated at 1.4 billion years old.
But age has taken the spring out of my step and in these times I'm content just to watch.

Nice photo tour. We remember being there with you. tc/Light/Breezes
Reminds me off every mediocre western and 1970s tv series xx
You do live in such an other-worldly place compared to here. I am fascinated by your photos of your local scenery.
Joshua Tree looks like this also, as does the continental divide east of Butte, Pipestone pass. Similar rock formations in both.
Such an odd terrain! Reminds me a bit of our Dolly Sods, also created by wind erosion.
Amazing scenery and so different from what I'm used to. Even when younger, I was too chicken to climb around on rocks; I know my limits and the extent of my clumsiness.
Scenes like this look familiar -- from movies. I've never been there.
Thanks for clarifying that you are not 1.4 billion year old! This reminds me of our granite boulders in Elephant Rocks State Park.
I live in Temecula, CA, area. We are surrounded by craggy hills with huge boulders. They are amazing.
Wise choice to give up the climbing! 😊
It's beautiful in every picture shown here. I love granite, especially when it is used as flooring or for kitchen counters which we call benchtops. Most people I know prefer marble, to them I say pfft!! Granite all the way.
I need to spend more time in the desert.
There is a town in Wisconsin called Wisconsin Dells or (The Dells). My son and his family lived there for a while. It's a very popular tourist spot. Doesn't look much like your Dells, although there are a lot of rocks...
That's a beautiful landscape -- and yes, it does look just like an old Western movie!
