YOU'RE NOT WELCOME!

We had an unwelcome pair of visitors this week.

Now let me be clear. We put out the birdbath and keep it filled with (relatively) fresh water. Every one is welcome to use it.

Even mourning doves. One of those coo-coo-coo birds was spending an inordinate amount of time at it the other day.

And that was fine. I enjoyed watching him even though their incessant call drives me somewhat crazy after awhile.

But it was when he began building a nest in the Redbud tree directly above the bird bath that I had to intervene.

It was fascinating to watch. A female was perched on a branch and the male was going to the ground, picking up small twigs and then building the nest literally around his mate while she sat docilely.

Now she may have been instructing him where to put the twigs and how she wanted them knitted together but it didn't appear like that to me.

When I told SWMBO what was going on she told me to chase them away. We did not, she said, want a couple of monotonous and noisy doves nesting that close to the house and we definitely did not want them perched directly above the bird bath. Fouling the water, shall we say.

So I chased them away and pulled down the beginnings of their nest. After my rude act of unfriendliness, they flew to someone else's tree and peace, of a sorts, was restored to Mr. Catalyst's Neighborhood.

Though I feel a tad guilty.

FRIDAY FUNNIES

It's rainy here today. A community-wide yard sale is planned for tomorrow. C'mon, Sun!

This next one is dedicated to my friend, Jim, a singer of some note(s).

Folks, have a happy weekend and always, always keep on laughing!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I may have said this before but I'll say it again. April and May get really busy around here.

Today is the day we commemorate the birth of a beautiful woman. I refer to her as SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed). Her eldest daughter refers to her as The M (The Mother). She answers to Judy. Or Judith, her given name. Around the house I call her Honey or Dearie. I used to call her JG, which are her given initials for Judith Gayle. But I used to joke that they stood for Judy Girl.

All in all, through thick and thin, as the saying goes, she's been by my side for . . . a few years. More than I can believe some times.

My dad really liked her.

And so do I.

Happy Birthday to my wife.

She's a good one.  I think I'll keep her.

A GRAND DAY FOR THE M

Yesterday the BRD invited SWMBO (also known as The M to her eldest daughter) and me to a Mothers' Day Brunch at her home.

Following Bloody Mary's and antipasto plates of shrimp and bruschetta with goat cheese and tomatoes, we repaired to her dining table, which was beautifully set with flower arrangements and the Beau Jack's late mother's china.

Shame on me for not photographing the food but I'll give you an idea of how good it tasted. Eggs Benedict, bacon, asparagus, new potatoes, mixed fresh fruit, Mimosas, and for dessert (as if we needed it!) fresh strawberries, ice cream and Angel Food cake.

Holy mackeral!

To top off the day, Beau Jack presented his surrogate Mom with this beautiful live orchid.

The M and I went home sated and mightily pleased. A grand day, indeed.
