Pals

Smoke, our sidewalk supervisor, yard foreman and the only one of our cats that we let go outdoors, has taken to napping on one of the deck chairs recently. I looked out and spotted him there this morning.

But, to my surprise, I discovered another cat on an adjacent chair.

This little darlin' has been hanging around lately and Smoke seemingly has accepted him. He's quite shy, yet bold, and neither of us has been able to approach him. I think he's a girl but SWMBO says yellow/orange cats are always boys and she named him Golden Boy. But he's not at all aggressive which, I guess, is why Smoke has accepted him so readily.

  1. That's so nice. I hope he/she comes to own you.

  2. QD - No no no, please, no no no! We have 3 now and that's way enough. Golden Boy can come around to visit, take naps, get a drink of water but that's it!

  3. Golden Boy, Golden Girl, you got another mouth to feed. (grin)

  4. Steve - I have been resisting that, so far successfully. After all, two or more cats that have lived either with us or the BRD came to us that way. This one seems to have another home somewhere in the neighborhood.

  5. So you got me on that genetics thing... Wikipedia has a long piece on cat genetics, but the most succinct comment I got from The Google re: orange cats is "how could orange cats produce more orange cats without female cooperation." Thus male marmalades are more common, but 1) there are females (we have one, Amber, in the neighborhood who is a sometimes buddy of Max) who are orange and 2) there are females of other coloration carrying the orange cat gene, which is recessive. On the other hand, calicos are almost always female.

  6. Well Julie I showed your comment to SWMBO and, of course, she waffled her way out of it. She claims what she has said is MOST yellow/orange cats are males. Not only that, she accused me of misrepresenting her. So you see what you've done!!! ;-/

  7. I've known a couple of ginger (as we say) female cats, and they were been right rotten and ornery characters, whereas the males have always been delightful, clever or charmingly eccentric. Thanks GJ, for 'calico' cat, which I've heard but never understood, we call them tortoiseshell!

He looks like a guy anyway.

  8. Looks like you should put out some treats and some cat nip tea for a social! :) Very cute.

  9. Lucy - He doesn't act like a guy, though.

M.I. - Ha! A dish of water will have to do. We tried a small dish of cat food but he just sniffed at it and walked away. He isn't hungry, that's for sure, just lonely maybe.

  10. My mother always swore all ginger cats were males, & all calicos or tortiose shells were females. I never met a calico male, but we gave our barmaid a ginger female- brother to our male, who was also ginger!
Lovely looking cat, whatever sex it is.

  11. Yes, Meggie, he/she is a handsome/pretty cat but he/she hasn't been around today. Probably sleeping through the heat, I guess.
