Didn't he own a liquor store in CA at the time?

I don't think he owned it then but he did later on. This was shortly after he had arrived in the U.S.

I saw Ky a couple times in VN, and his wife was famous for wearing tight pants and a revolver slung low on her hip.

Yes, they were a pair to draw to. I think he was pretty much a gangster.
