ThrowBack Thursday

From 1996 to 2003 Judy and I owned and operated a new and used bookstore called BOOKENDS in Prescott Valley. This first picture was taken near the beginning.

The next picture was taken some time later. The stress is beginning to show.

It was fun but also incredibly frustrating. Bookselling sounds like an easy way to make a living.

It isn't.

It must be even more difficult today with electronic books.

You looked like a mere pup in 96, before you began the good fight.

Running a bookstore is more a calling than a career anymore. Unfortunately labors of love do not pay the rent.

That's pretty much what Larry McMurtry says about his bookstore. I guess that's why he cranked out so many novels.

Many people think retail would be fun, but you and I know the truth--- it isn't.

I'm pretty sure I bought some books in there. That was a long time ago so don't ask what books I bought.

See, the problem is that retail involves working with PEOPLE. And People are mostly annoying in my experience. :)
