TUESDAY TRAVELS

Me and my buddy, Captain Jack Sparrow.

In reality, the pirates are only cardboard cutouts in a shop in the Pike Place Market in Seattle.

I find it hard to believe but our visit there to spend some time with our friend, Lori, and her husband, Dick, was 10 years ago!

By the way, I WAS in a movie with Johnny Depp back in the early 1990's but it was long before Captain Jack.

It was "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" and it was filmed around Austin, Texas, where I was living then and I got a chance to be an extra.

This year's Oscar winner for best actor, Leonardo DiCaprio, also was in that film.

But getting back to Seattle, who doesn't love the Pike Place Market.

Lots of good eating there.

Speaking of which, we had drinks and lunch one day at the ultimate Seattle tourist destination, high atop the Space Needle.

Nice view.

And Lori and Dick have a nice view from the balcony of their condominium, too.

Sometimes it looks like everyone in town owns a boat.

Even though it's relatively close, there is one sight that is rarely seen in Seattle because of the frequent cloudy days.

It's Mount Rainier.

But we were lucky with sunshine when we were there and one day we caught sight of it.

We met Lori when we lived in Mexico and have remained friends with her ever since.

Regular readers of this blog should know that she supplies lots of the material for my Friday Funnies postings.

And she was a great hostess for our trip to the Pacific Northwest in 2006.

  1. Enjoyable post. You should have been an actor.

  2. You and Depp have a common "glint" in your eyes. I think it is a touch of "gonzo."

  3. When my Judge grandfather came back from WWI he drove from ND to Seattle on the 1919 gravel roads of the day. The trip was a highlight of his life, included having to back up the steep climbs because the gravity feed gas tank. The summer between my Jr. and Sr. year of high school gramps and I re-created his trip, this time in his Caddy Fleetwood. It was the summer of the Seattle World's Fair. The Space needle was brand new, the Pike Place market was old. I ate my first clams at Ivar's, ate my first fresh salmon. The trip is a highlight of my life. And yes, he was a wonderful guy to have as a grandpa. I've been back many times since then and Seattle is one our great cities.

  4. Heading over there on Thursday, and hopefully the heat wave they're having will be over. Oldest daughter reported it was 88f yesterday, a record for April by several degrees.
Looks like your friend Lori has a condo in the U district, just west of campus. That area has undergone many changes in the last decade.
Pike Place is a fun place for locals too, we just don't buy the fish the vendor's toss around, worst think you can do to a fresh fish.
I had a Nonsuch 33 at that very marina 25 years ago.
    Nice post, Bruce.
    Cheers,
    Mike

  5. Count me in as a Seattle lover, too! I have many relatives in the area and on the islands. The last time I was there we ate lunch next door to Bill Gates' home. My cousin knew him as a kid. Our son is entertaining the idea of going back to Seattle for a different job. Tremendous amount of growth happening there. My cousin also has a condo view like that. Pretty cool.

  7. You did manage to catch Seattle on a rare sunny day. It's usually rainy when I'm there.

  8. If you were going to be an extra in a movie that would be a good one to be in!

  9. Ooh! Mt. Rainier looks like a mirage!

I would NEED a drink to enjoy lunch high atop the Space Needle.
