THE LEARNING PROCESS

Last night Judy made herself a sandwich and I asked her what it was.

She said "peanut butter, dill pickle, lettuce and mayonnaise on whole grain bread."

I responded as I always do "Ewwwwwwwww."

This time she had had enough.

She handed over half of it and ordered me to take a bite, a big bite.

Against my better judgement I did.

Today I made myself a sandwich.

Peanut butter, dill pickle, lettuce and mayonnaise on whole grain bread.

It was wonderful.

I am nearly 77 years old.

It is never too late for an old dog to learn a new trick.

And acting on SWMBO's advice after Val's comment yesterday about never having eaten asparagus and never planning to, "Val, try it.  Don't boil it.  Just saute it lightly in a tad of butter or oil, douse it with lemon juice and dig in."

As for Natalie's comment about ones bodily fluids after consuming some of the delicious green spears, SWMBO agrees but I insist that I know nothing about it.

  1. Asparagus is wonderful, and sauteed is the way to go. Bit of olive oil, bit of garlic, sea salt, and most important don't overcook....should still be a bit crisp.

Pickles and peanut butter does sound oddly good.

  2. I see. Now I'm an OLD DOG! Not sure if I want to try that asparagus trick. I might, however, try the sandwich...

  3. It doesn't sound appealing but I've been mistaken before.

  4. One of my favorites sandwiches when I was a lad and discovering the kitchen, was peanut butter, mayo and lettuce. Some times I jazzed it up and added banana. I'm willing, for the sake of culinary experimentation, to try the dill pickle.

  5. Old dogs can be taught new tricks, they proved it on Mythbusters.

  6. That sandwich sounds good, except for the pickle...I don't do pickle. Grilled asparagus is very good...go for it Val.

  7. That is one combination I would have never thought of. I'm only 66, so I guess I have 11 years to work up my nerve. ;)

  8. That's a combination that really shouldn't work!

  9. Well, I'm older than you and I'll be damned if I'll ever learn anything new! :) With one exception: if you could fix my golf swing, that would be worth dealing with. But a sandwich? Sheesh! 😇

  10. I'll have to try that sandwich - I have peanut butter every day anyway!

  11. Okay, I may have to give that combination a try. When I was a kid growing up in Illinois, my favorite sandwich was butter, sliced tomatoes with a little salt and pepper on Roman Meal bread. Delicious! Of course, that was back in the days when tomatoes tasted like tomatoes instead of water.

  12. I'm glad to see at least a few other people like PB, mayo, and lettuce sandwiches. That's what I ate as a kid (in the 1950's and 60's), and I still enjoy it occasionally today. No pickles, though, and growing up it was always white bread.
