Tangentially, a 'alternative' history fiction, "Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Columbus" by Orson Scott Card gives a 'what if' version. Also, I'll go with Indigenous Peoples Day.
I was wondering why friends on Facebook were posting pics about America and Christopher Columbus and the native indigenous people. I had forgotten all about this holiday. Not that I would celebrate it anyway. Yes to Indigenous People Day.
I went down to mail a package this morning, completely forgetting it was a federal holiday. The post office said it was Columbus Day and the restaurant across the street had a sign it was going to be closed for Columbus Day. So much for Indigenous People Day, I thought. 🙁
You leave me in confusion since I don't know who you are or where you live. If you're in much of my state (of residence, that is) your final statement is completely understandable.
I think that we look at our history square on. Columbus Day is a federal holiday, but there is no reason that we can't claim the day, and still recognize the ugliness that it resulted in. It's history. It's sadly, OUR history.

I'll go with the latter although I don't celebrate the day anyway. Happy Canadian Thanksgiving instead!

I never understood the American fascination with Columbus. The man never stepped onto US land.
