Gluhwein (mulled wine) is similar but without the apple cider. Both can be lit aflame. I've had Gluhwein with my Austrian neighbors in Michigan and quite liked it. I think the mulled wine is sweet and the wassail is tart. We're having Manhattens instead.
In Germany, at the Christmas Markets in towns, a variation of this is served. Usually with the additive of some additional liqueur...I seem to remember something like a brandy.
It's a drink?
ReplyDeleteWassail is, but only if you're desperate.

ReplyDeleteWhat exactly is wassail anyway?
ReplyDeleteWarmed apple cider, perhaps red wine, perhaps brandy, and a variety of spices. Yech!
DeleteI like the song, but I don't know about the drink.
ReplyDeleteI've never tried it and had to look up the recipe. Apparently some people like it, but I don't think I'm missing anything.
ReplyDeleteI think I will pass. I'll stick to red wine.
