THE IN-BETWEEN DAYS

Call them the Days of Confusion.

When Christmas and New Year's both fall on Wednesday like this season, it muddles the mind into a gray mess.

I saw a thing on the Web the other day that said in part something like "No one really knows what day or time it is. Can we start drinking at 10 a.m.? Why not.  Who cares."

I haven't reached that stage yet though the thought has occurred to me.

I thought I'd show you our Christmas dinner.

Which we had on the 26th, I think.

I got up and made yeast waffles and Judy fixed breakfast sausage Christmas morning and we stuffed ourselves to the degree that the thought of making dinner that day was just too much.

So I doctored up a frozen pizza and that was our meal.

After all, it's just the two of us.

But the next day we finally roused up enough to fix our yuletide feast.

Which is a bit of deflection on my part because actually it was reheating the leftovers from our Thanksgiving meal.

Clockwise, starting on the left side, roasted sweet potatoes and pineapple, mashed potatoes, roast pork and dressing; the latter three draped in pork gravy; and an addition, some sliced red beets, which I liked but Judy didn't find to her favor.

At any rate, it was a tasty dinner, accompanied by a bottle of Prosecco.

Dessert may have been homemade cookies but I can't remember for sure.

Meantime, our little cat Sweetie-Pie, took over one of her favorite spots, cuddled on my bed for a lengthy nap.

I dozed off for a bit either in my recliner with a book open on my lap or in front of the television set in the living room as Judy stayed awake and watched a movie.

Pretty boring, huh?

I think it's the meaning of a good but quiet life in retirement.

  2. Well yes we have become day drinkers. Not even proclaiming it's 5 o'clock somewhere. And what day is it. I'm sorry but this week Thursday was Monday. This is not due to old age. It is due to mass confusion.

  5. As we've aged and have fewer and timers no guests, we make much less.

  6. To my dying day I will obey the Christmas feasting rituals and not go "off piste" as you and Judy appear to have done this year. Stick with the schedule dude!

    1. My beloved SWMBO says "We're old! We can do what we like!" And tonight we dined on leftover croissants, sliced ham, a wonderful white cheddar cheese, Dijon mustard, some brie, a mango habanero pepper jelly, tiny shrimp with cocktail sauce, etc. etc. If that's going "off piste", I'll take it, mi amigo!

    2. Confucius say, "Skiers who go off-piste might run into a rock or a tree.." There's also the possibility of avalanches or simply getting lost.

  7. The older I get, the more I appreciate boring--or more accurately, uneventful. As I have preached several times on my blog, we can make the holiday exactly what we want/don't want. More power to Judy and you!!

  8. I have to agree with Judy on the beets, and I'm no fan of sweet potatoes, but the rest looks delicious. If drinking wasn't okay for mornings, then what's the deal with a Mimosa and Bloody Mary?

  9. I am not a fan of beets either, but I do like quiet days.

    1. "Eating half a cup of canned beets every day is generally safe for most people and can be part of a healthy diet. Beets are rich in nutrients, including fiber, folate, and antioxidants, and they can offer several health benefits, such as improving blood flow and lowering blood pressure." - from Healthline.

  14. We've been saying every day, "What day is it?!" I thought it was because we were traveling part of the time, but maybe it's because of the way the holidays fall, as you said.

  17. Sounds pretty good to me. I have a son who is single, so every Christmas we have him and his kids. On rare occasions in the past it would be just us two, and it was kinda nice.
