AH YOUTH

Once one reaches a certain age one's curiousity about his past comes to the fore.

Apparently that also comes to the minds of one's friends.

At least mine.

Tommy Terrific sent me this photo the other day and after cropping it slightly and correcting the color intensity, I thought I'd show it to you.

Left to right here are the afore-mentioned Tommy Terrific, your Catalyst, and the frequently named in this blog Timmer.

Just to treat them with the respect their years have earned them their true names are Tom Cochrun, Bruce Taylor, and Tim Dietz.

Three journalists.

Tom is now retired in Central California, Tim has (finally!) retired in a suburb of Denver, and I live in Central Arizona.

Tom and I have been friends for over 55 years, Tim and I for around 50.

Baseball Steve (Steve Torbeck of Phoenix) and I have over 50 years on the calendar as friends.

I heard from all three of them on my recent birthday.

Sometimes the old friends are the best friends.

  1. I have a best friend from when we were 5. We are both 73 this year. I just talked to her this morning. We have never let a week go by without a phone call since college. Just one person to tell everything to in your life is a great thing. Decades of marriages, births, deaths, birthdays, and sometimes the boring every day things. Rick and I drove by the pie place, Rock Springs Cafe, on our way to Phoenix Friday and I thought of you and your buds!

    1. Yes, it's been a long time since my last visit to the Pie Place. Lots of good memories from there.

  2. Old friends know your history and back stories, both good and bad. They understand what's shaped you into the person you are now. That's the beauty of long friendships!

  3. My best friend, Jan, is a woman I met in Fall of 1964 when we went to high school together. Our friendship would ebb some years but always picked up again and we are still going strong now.
We used to sing in scouts, "Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other gold."

  5. How wonderful to maintain these friendships. My emigration tended to make them dwindle, but some have endured.

  8. I never forged any lasting keep-in-touch friendships, we moved around so much. I'll have to do something about that before I get too old and start forgetting.

  9. It just occurred to me that the thing about long-time friends is that you don't have to prove yourself to them - they have already accepted your quirks!

  13. The three of you look like a singing group or "boy band" in your cool shades. Having those friends of 50+ years is a genuine blessing Bruce. In that respect you are a very fortunate man.
