FOURTH OF JULY BOUNTY

We harvested our first crop yesterday.

Three cherry tomatoes and a sprig of basil.

We have a small herb and tomato garden in pots on the back patio.

We have used some of the Italian parsley, the basil, the mint, the oregano before.

I sprinkle parsley and basil on our Friday night pizza just out of the oven.

Pretty darn good.

But these were the first cherry tomatoes to come off their plant.

Fresh, there was only one thing that could have made them better.

They made a nice appetizer before dinner.

Well today is the big day, the Fourth of July.

My calendar says it is Independence Day.

So we're doing brats and corn on the cob on the grill, along with some onions and peppers later today.

No fireworks.

All of the towns and cities in our immediate area have called off their fireworks displays because of the fire danger - high winds and hot and dry conditions.

Except for the random lawbreaker shooting off a private stash, the area dogs should be safe from those large noises that terrify them.

That's a good thing.

  1. Happy 4th to you and Brudy. gonna put some baby back ribs on the grill today and hope no one does anything stupid with fireworks. We've got 11 active fires going in Colorado right now. And its been very very dry around here.

  2. We're taking Anze the Dog to the beach, he loves to dig holes in the sand, lunch at Neptune's Net and then home to filets on the grill. Speaking of little tomatoes, I did tuna, tomatoes, spinach in a white wine sauce over spaghetti last night...mmm.

You two have a wonderful 4th sans fireworks.

  3. LOOOOONG line caught salmon filet wrapped and tied in cedar papers. We've done the cedar planks before, but this is the first time we've tried the papers. Available at SPROUTS at the meat/fish counter. And thin, thin, thin asparagus, which cretins that we are, we eat with our fingers. Will not miss the fireworks noise this year, even though we can see them from our front porch. We, of course, will do some office work and are knee deep in a garage project.

  4. Despite their illegality here as well, some neighbors have been testing their stash each night for the past few; our poor dogs. Enjoy the holiday! Love a good brat! (as in bratz. LOL)

  5. Happy Fourth of July Bruce! I miss the celebration...
You can't imagine how it is difficult here in Toulouse to find tomatoes which have the taste of tomatoes, organic is common but I presume the organic tomatoes grow in water and not in soil which explain the lack of taste.
Your cherry tomatoes look yummy! I wish you a good crop.

  9. Those are lovely! We haven't successfully grown tomatoes in a few years darn it.

We're having a quiet day on Beech Mountain. Mike strained his back unpacking the car, so we're doing what we always say we'll do on vacation, but never really do, RELAXING!

  12. Those tomatoes look delicious and the basil looks perfect. In fact, that basil looks way better than the basil I bought at the grocery store a few days ago. I didn't even try to see any fireworks last night.
