Beef on the Hoof

These pictures were all taken just a couple of blocks from where I live. It's a big open field and sometimes the rancher who owns it has his cattle grazing on it.

This big fella doesn't look pleased. I'm not sure whether he's got his rear foot tangled up in that brushy tree or if he's just thinking about taking on the wise guy with the camera.

At any rate he got his foot untangled and turned to give me this nice profile.

A handsome animal.

(Try not to picture where the steaks and hamburgers are going to come from.)

  2. I think it's pork carnitas for me tonight. SWMBO had fried up a bunch of pork chops the other day and today it became my job to separate the meat from the fat and the bones. That was one messy job that I will not volunteer for again! But I'll sure help eat 'em!

  3. Ah, carnitas -- I bought a pound of it over at Garcia's market in the Goodwin St. Plaza today.

  5. I have never heard of carnitas?
However though I like pork, I do not eat red meat, so the steer is in no danger from me!

  6. It's all milky moo-cows round here, though there is one handsome young bull fellah who hangs out with them. I like taking pics of cattle, they have such interesting shapes and angles...

  7. Meg - They're a Mexican specialty.

Lucy - I think these are my first pictures of cattle, ever. I do like the last one.

  8. I love the picture showing the cattle grazing with the housing development in the background! It's a great visual comment on our changing society:)
Do you still see pronghorn grazing in these areas?

  9. Only a few once in a great while. For the most part, they seem to have moved on to Williamson Valley.
