We had one in our yard when I was a kid and I remember it was a great climbing tree, but you're right, they are messy (I hope the stature of limitations has run out because I must admit I climbed without a helmet or any kind of fall protection.)
I've been noticing those trees round here quite a bit, often planted in car parks, never big enough to climb. I didn't know they were mimosas, those are usually the ones with the yellow pom-pom flowers that come out early in the year.
