CACTUS FLOWER

Back in 1969 there was this quirky little movie with a cute, big-eyed blonde at the center of it.

Her name was Goldie Hawn.  This was her first movie and she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for it.

Earlier the "dumb blonde" had made her fame on the t.v. show Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In, frequently in a bikini and a lot of body paint.

Now you're wondering why I brought Kate Hudson's mother to your attention today.

For precisely this reason.

I thought of her when I was photographing these "cactus flowers" the other day.

(Pretty sneaky way to get a picture of a blonde in a bikini into my blog, eh?)

  1. I've seen that movie more than once and I just don't see how Goldie received an Academy Award for that performance.

    1. I probably saw it but can't remember it. She also won a Golden Globe for that role.

  3. She first appeared in a TV show "Good Morning World" as the cookie neighbor. I was devastated when it went off the air after only 6 or 8 weeks. Fortunately there was then "Laugh-In." Goldie's the best!!

    1. Joeh, an Arizona friend emailed me to say "Tell Joeh she was the kookie neighbor, not the cookie neighbor!" I know what you're about to say - "Damned spell checker!"

  7. I love the "toothpicks" part! and I spent (and will spend) so much good time watching movie with Goldie Hawn.

  8. I think Goldie was a 'meme' for the 60's, if I'm using 'meme' correctly. A foot in the door of sorts for the counter-culture into the mainstream.

The cactus is beautiful, nice pictures.

  9. I have a picture of myself just like that bikini one, when I was 17 years old. And Goldie is where I got the idea to do it and my sister Sharon was more than happy to photograph it for me!
