WHEN IT RAINS IN ARIZONA

If you've been paying attention over the past few years you know that Arizona and much of the Southwest and the Far West of the United States have been in drought conditions.

Here's what happens when we get a lot of rain in a short period of time like we did this afternoon.

That and all of the waterlogged areas you'll see in the following photos are a normally tinder-dry field just a very short distance from where we live.

Fortunately we live uphill from where all this water is flowing and collecting but some people further down the hill may not have been so lucky.

We saw fire crews out blocking the roads through a low-lying area.

Our thoughts are with folks who may live down there.

Incidentally, the nearest Weather Underground reporting station, less than half a mile from our house, lists just over two-thirds of an inch of rain from this afternoon's thunderstorm.

  1. We, too, are grateful for living on higher ground. Though, we have a river running down our street and a scene much like yours across the street. Glad to not be leaking anywhere. Too much rain, too fast, on too dry and hard ground. I think next year I will invest in a rain barrel! This was quite an electrical storm this time. Makes for a nervous dog when there is that much lightning. Was going to grill grass fed/grass finished steaks on the grille, now popping a beer instead and having a pizza! This is not grilling weather!

  2. That's scary! And it doesn't seem like 2/3 of an inch should produce that much runoff. But as you say, that's what happens when everything is so dry.

  4. Reading this morning that California has moved into a 12 month fire season. We had very little rain this year and record high temps all over the state. Our old home state, ND has been pounded by T-storms in the east and tornadoes in the western part of the state. The east had a bizarre winter, of course the only part of the government preparing for changing climate is the Defense Department, the rest of DC thinks it's a hoax. Roll Coal!

  5. Yes, you are fortunate to live on higher ground. We're in a hilly area, and sit atop one of them. Our only problem is getting in and out when the creeks overflow the bridges and sometimes roads.

  7. I hope you have a reservoir to collect all that water so you can use it tomorrow.....when it is bone dry again.

  8. You need a nice light soaking rain not one of these torrential downpours that cause damage! Glad you are uphill!
