The part of that story no one tells you is that young Piet in doing his dike plugging duty wasn't actually missed by anyone at home, until three months went by, and by then all that was left of him was a skeleton alongside the dike, one bony finger still plugging the hole.
I'm sorry, but your monk looks like he has seen his better days, eh? Maybe get a Buddha statue for the next round of moisture. Covering all the bases, so to speak.
