Feeling depressed about the current situation of the World, are you? Take heart. This tuneful little melody was recorded many years ago by the famous Kingston Trio. It seems the more things change, the more they stay the same. Feel free to sing along.
It's not surprising that some of you don't recall the song. It came out when I was in my 2nd year of college - 1959, 61 years ago! It was on the Kingston Trio's first album: "...from the hungry i". The "hungry i" was a nightclub in San Francisco.
I remember hearing that tune frequently. One of my buddies was a real "folk fan" and was learning to play the guitar. His older brother, who was studying in Europe, "loaned" his folk collection to Mark. Another of the pals was a Vaughn Meader nut and so we heard his JFK impersonations while hanging out in the "rec-room basement." He had the perfect place for high school guys to "recreate" what with a basketball court outside as well. This would have been early 60's, while you were already off to college. I had taken an interest in jazz, listening to a local Jazz station as well as the Good Guys Top 40 station. I remember borrowing a copy of my dad's Louie Prima album to take over to Marks. One of the guys in the group was a classic music fan. Recounting all of this now, I realize what an odd collection of tastes from middle American, suburban, boys. Of course the Beatles were not to hit for a couple of years.
I love the Kingston Trio. Did you see that Bob Shane just recently died? The last surviving member.
ReplyDeleteI don't remember that song but thanks for cheering me up? Not!
ReplyDeleteAlways enjoyed the Kingston Trio but didn't remember this wonderfully tragicomic song. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI can't recall the band name.
ReplyDeleteWe listened to this song just the other day! It's good to be reminded that things really don't change very much. Thank you for this.

ReplyDeleteOops, make that their first "live" album. It was actually their second album.

I was a fan of the Kingston Trio too. Thanks for bringing back some warm memories.
ReplyDeleteOMG...I had forgotten all about that little ditty. It turns out it's timeless!
