DANDY PESTS

Behold, the mighty dandelion!

They do look harmless with their puffy dying blossoms, in my neighbor's yard.

But not in this quantity, I suspect.

SWMBO has a quiet rage going on about them as the neighbors seem not to notice them.

I don't know how they could miss them as they are filling the yard.

Oh, I suppose one of these days they will take note and try to do something about them.

I'm not one for complaining as long as they stay out of our yard.

  2. I love a dandelion when it is first yellow and then at the point your photos are at - just a puff away from then looking like weeds. If you were in a HOA that neighbor would be fined, or shot.

My dad made dandelion wine one summer. Otherwise, referred to as white lighting by everyone who drank it. He gave it as gifts to many dismayed or happy recipients.

  3. I wonder where in the chain of human evolution our minds decreed that dandelions, broad leaf vegetation, thistle and the like were "weeds" and deemed unfit? Why did we decide that grass, was any better?
Left to their own these "weeds" will grow (like weeds-no doubt), provide natural vegetation, ground cover, prevent erosion, give off their part of the photosynthesis calculus and often they bear beauty of their own.
    Why, old wise one, why?

  5. Dandelion flowers and the puffy blooms look pretty to me. I don't have a lawn, I have large areas of shrubs, trees, flowers and wood chips, so low maintenance and low water and no chemicals needed. When I see dandelions I let them be. I do recall my dad with a trowels digging up dandelions from our lawn.

  6. I've heard that bees love them.

  7. I thought them the prettiest part of the lawn as a kid. I loved blowing the seeds, too. I was made to pull them, which is impossible without a deep narrow digger to get the tap root. Weeds are smart and durable, stabilize soil and first-foot after fires and volcanoes.

I keep them out of my garden, because they displace what I'm trying to grow. But with respect.

  8. I have mixed feelings about dandelions. They are everywhere like a weed and reseed like crazy. But they provide food for so many other critters.

  9. Life is a lot easier and more fun if you learn to love the weeds.

  10. The first flowers for the bees to keep them going...seed beads for many small birds...and possibly small mammals....just enjoy the beauty
