As we have our backyard bbq for our family today, raise your glass or bottle to Bill Koho, Lcpl, forward observer, killed by a land mine north of Da Nang, March 1967. A hell of a baseball player, and a tough, dedicated Marine.
In the town I grew up in is a charming cemetery where children still learn to ride their bikes and deer sleep under the pines at night (both have been know to jump the fence). It was established in 1826, but 3 people were buried there in 1817. Mount Avon Cemetery in Rochester, Michigan is on the State Register of Historic Sites.
There is a statue of The Unknown Solider erected in honor of those residents who served between 1861-1865 at the entrance. This is where the Memorial Day and 4th of July parades would end with a speech and a gun salute.
People would be strolling among the lovely old head stones of lambs and angels, placing flags and flowers in urns on the sites of their relatives.
I think during this time of face masks and 6' social distancing, I most miss huge crowds of people coming together to celebrate events.
