HIGH IN THE SKY

I was sharing some pictures of a trip to Seattle far back in my past with a Washington-based friend yesterday and ran across this one from our visit to the famous Space Needle.

We were across an aisle from a window and when the people sitting at this table noticed I was trying to get a picture they graciously leaned back so as to be out of the frame.

I like the result with the drinks and the light on their table in contrast to the amazing skyline of Seattle.

When I asked Judy to remind me of something from that trip she said she thought that was also the last time we flew in an airplane.

2006 - almost a lifetime in the past.

  1. It may be that way for me too since both daughters are now local and John doesn't like to travel--at least not by plane! I think I've eaten up there too, but it was a LONG time ago.

    1. I used to like jet travel but would get absolutely white knuckled when I had to fly in a small plane that bounced around on the thermals.

  2. I spent many years in Seattle, mostly at Swedish MC. The skyline has changed so much even from this photo, Bruce. I was recently there, and there is still construction everywhere, new highrises going up near the space needle.

    1. Margaret told me about visiting a Chihuly Museum and Garden near the Space Needle. It wasn't there when we visited but we did see his work at the Glass Museum in Tacoma.

    2. Don't they have Chihuly glass at the botanical gardens near you? Or was that a temporary display? Or has my mind gone completely?

    3. Debby, that's in Phoenix, about 100 miles from here. And I believe it comes and goes.

  3. Yes, long time since I've flown and since I have been in Seattle. Had a wonderful family reunion of my dad's side on Harstine Island in 2008 at a relative's summer home. One of my older cousins had great tales of Bill Gates as a 9 year old while we ate at Alderbrook next door to one of Gates's homes. That's a wonderful photo!!

    1. I can imagine a 9 year old Gates. When I was 13 or so I taught my dad how to adjust our black and white television so the picture wouldn't roll.

  4. We have been in an airplane since 2006 but not since 2010. Back in '06 we visited your state.

  5. High in the sky. Different from being high in a Mexican hacienda with Jefferson Airplane and Pink Floyd playing over the sound system.

  6. My last flight is almost that far back. to think that one time I had to take a small airplane if I wanted to go anywhere.

    1. That's how I started, Red. Renting a plane to go up to get film of North Dakota snowstorms and the like.

  7. I love that picture. Much more interesting with the table and drinks in the foreground.

Last time I flew, and was in Seattle, was 1975. Too bad I didn't get any pictures of dinosaurs roaming the earth. We were actually on the way to Ketchikan, Alaska, to visit my uncle. Flew on a four-seater water plane that same trip. Not for fun, but being rescued from an island. I am not the adventurous sort, and have not missed flying all these years.

    1. Some day I'll have to hear the whole story of that island rescue.

  8. That is a lovely photo. Was it a cloudy day or near dusk? The table lamp is very nice.

    1. It must have been cloudy because this was mid-day.

  9. Yes, that picture was a lot better with the table and candle. That was nice of them.

    1. Yes, we "seniors" seem to have mostly given up air travel.

  11. Oh wow, that is a long time to go without an air trip. I bet there are a few new buildings in that scene since your photo was taken.

    1. Mike (above as Should Fish More) says there's a lot of constant construction.

  12. I had forgotten about the Space Needle. We used to see it when we lived on the Olympic Peninsula and would drive to the big city of Seattle. I haven't been on an airplane since the 1990s. (NewRobin13)

  13. I flew in a plane to Houston just this past Fall and will have to fly again there soon as I have a new grandson that was born in December. Planes are so crowded now, it is not too comfortable!

  14. Nice! I like it with the tabletop too. I was there in 1996, ten years before you! I should dig those pictures out...
