AVIAN ADVENTURES

Our two birdbaths, the blue one and the metal one down below that we put there to keep the neighborhood cats from drinking out of the blue one and tipping it over, are especially popular right after we have filled them with fresh water.

Of late we have been discovered by some common sparrows.

SWMBO tells me they come in flocks.

And the little flockers dominate the baths when they arrive, whether to bathe or to drink.

I would prefer that we could have a more colorful bird but I guess the sparrows need a cooling drink or bath too.

Meantime, high in a neighboring tree, a different bird . . . a Phoebe perhaps . . . maintains a lookout.

  1. Bird baths make me think of Grackles. Was there ever a greater nuisance bird? They will crap in bird baths. They will eat house sparrows. They will eat the eggs of other birds. They look like a black bird that has been stretched. With sparrows at your yard, watch for Grackles to follow.

  2. The Sparrows seem to be really flocking together here now as they poke about in lawns, etc.

  3. Ah - we actually miss our sparrows! One of our friends called them the Board of Directors. No sparrows in our yard here - it's all doves, cardinals, chipping sparrows, & the occasional goldfinches.

  4. We mostly have sparrows, but the finches love the sunflower seeds most.

  6. It's so fun to watch a bird in a birdbath -- even a sparrow. I'm not sure I've ever seen a phoebe!
