BE-WITCHING

 The season is drawing nigh.

I ONLY KNOW IT'S MONDAY

In this 21st Century a hoo-hah has erupted over whether today's holiday is Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples' Day.

In the once peaceful city of Portland, Oregon, statues of Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt were torn down overnight.

I can't make sense of it all.

So I resort to a cartoon, with which to wish you all a good holiday.

POT PLANTS

Our pot plants are hanging in there nicely, possibly due to the continued warm weather.

(They're not what you may have been expecting. I call them that because we grow them in pots.)

The tallest plant here is a Serrano pepper plant.

Next to it is a Shishito pepper plant.

Down in front is a Coleus plant that started from a cutting and was about to be given up for dead until SWMBO brought it outside and snuggled it in with the pepper plants.

Since then it has thrived.

In the lower left you can see a Basil plant and way down to the right you can catch a glimpse of a Mint plant.

There's also a peek down in front of our struggling Chives, about done for the season.

Meanwhile the tomato plant keeps surprising us with a plethora of various sized fruit though it's beginning to look like we may have to have some Fried Green Tomatoes.

The rain gauge sharing the pot regrettably is as dry and unused as that barbecue grill in the background.

Pot gardening - it's been profitable this year and kind of fun.

THE FRIDAY FUNNIES

Yes, I know.

The weeks just keep getting weirder and weirder.

Sometimes I think, "how can I come up with something to make people laugh."

But I keep trying and searching, aided by my many contributors and fellow funny folk.

So with that wee bit of alliteration, let us begin.

Okay, you're giggling, right?

C'mon, I know I got you with at least SOME of these.

Well, whatever, have yourselves a wonderful weekend.

And always remember to keep laughing!

HYDRATE

For years now, I've been taking a drug called Warfarin, which is a blood thinner.

That requires me to have a blood sample taken every four weeks.

It used to be simple, just a quick finger stick and a drop of blood taken.

But then the labs here quit using the finger stick and instead insist on sticking a needle into your arm and drawing out a larger quantity of blood.

So today, I went to have my monthly blood draw and here's what happened.

My bandaged left arm . . Old Faithful, as I call it.

Except today while the nurse hit the vein right off, the blood didn't come in a quantity that she needed.

So, the right arm got pierced, as well.

That one got enough blood to satisfy the lab personnel.

I've been having these tests done for so long the piercing actually doesn't bother me all that much.

But if you fear needles let me advise you, as the nurses do me, drink lots of water the day before your blood test.

Actually we're supposed to drink lots of water every day.

So do it.

And wear your mask.

That's today's medical lesson from Doctor Catalyst.

THE BRITS

I began watching Downton Abbey yesterday.

I had watched around the first six episodes a couple of years ago and then quit so I decided to start at the beginning once again.

Nothing like a British drama to relax the mind.

And then what turned up in my email?

Probably from Wacky Wally but I'm not sure.

At any rate, here it is.

Coincidence?

Must have been.

SPOOKINESS

I'm not sure how long Halloween decorations have begun coming out in my town.

Or as I call it, "rushing the season".

But since it is now October I guess I can post my first of the "seasons greetings".

Rest assured, spookiness abounds.

This once-attractive young lady hangs by a noose from a tree in a yard not far from where I reside.

The first time I saw her I was driving by and she twirled perfectly in a breeze, making it appear she was turning and watching me pass by.

Creepy!

And then there's this - sent recently by one of my Friday Funnies contributors, Wacky Wally.

There may be no trick or treating going on this year but weirdness still teems.

THE FRIDAY FUNNIES

Without comment on this week's news, let us commence.

That's all I've got for The Week That Was.

Have yourselves a happy little weekend and always remember to keep laughing!

THE CATS-ENJAMMER KIDS

My good friend, Tom of Light Breezes sent me a photo this morning of his big orange cat, Hemingway, lolling in the sun with, as Tom put it, "his buddies".

He graciously gave me permission to show the picture to you.

Cats always seem to instinctively know where they look best and old Hemingway is no exception.

AUTUMN, AT LAST

Okay, it's the fall of the year up here in the Northern Hemisphere.

(I know, Meggie, it's the beginning of Spring down there in Oz where you live.)

The Autumnal equinox took place a few days, well nearly a week ago so now the leaves are changing and falling and the temperatures are getting cooler and we're looking for the flannels and the heavy blankets, right?

Well, here in the Central Highlands of Arizona, the mercury is still climbing into the 80's every day and it's still over 100 in Phoenix, just 80 or so miles to the south of me.

Hey, I know! Just get off my back, willya?

Look at the good side of it.

Just last evening as SWMBO and I were enjoying happy hour on our back patio she commented that it was curious how Venus came out and the skies turned dark and it got cooler a lot earlier in the evening.

And that's why she is called She Who Must Be Obeyed.

She understands all this science stuff.

So I just smiled and reflected on my good fortune.

So whatever way you celebrate, enjoy this blessed time of year.

After all, it won't be long until you'll have to get the snow shovels out and spend your days cursing Winter.

(All except you, Canadian William!)

These are the times that try men's souls.

AH, HAMLET

To be . .

. . or not to be.

That is the question.

THE FRIDAY FUNNIES

 Oops, I forgot.

Maybe the rough night conditioned by forgetting to take my bedtime pills until 3:30 this morning caused it.

But Wacky Wally reminded me so, with a slightly red face, here we go.

Now stop the groaning.

If at least one of those didn't get a smile from you then you're not normal.

'Course, whoever said I was normal!

Listen up now, have an elegant, lively, lovely, lackadaisical, non-lethargic weekend, loaded with lavish lampoonery in your leisure time.

And always remember to keep laughing!

Here, kitty-kitty . . .

(Uh-oh, NOW who's not normal?)
